The Purpose of Government

From Jerry Pournelle:
The purpose of modern government is to take money from the folks who save and pay their bills and live within their means, and use that to hire government workers; and to keep their power by using the money to buy votes from those who do not save and pay their bills and live within their means. And of course the money comes from those who work and save and pay their bills and live within their means -- who else will have any money for the government to take?

Or am I unduly cynical? But you ain't seen nothing yet.

The government do take money from people, which they may call taxation. But currently government doesn't and can't take money from people without payoff. As a return, they build up schools, hospitals, community parks ect and construct public utilities that we can all benefit from. Some people may think that the government takes too much from their incomes and what makes them unwilling is that government doesn't seem to use all the money to make their lives better. Instead, the government appears to use the money to strengthen millitary, which people consider as an unnecessary and faraway concern. That's what I think about government taking money from people.
